当代著名新意象、抽象艺术家徐适先生，其在上海曾祖和祖父徐玉林写书法、精通古汉语、中医和英文等，热爱收藏古代书画、其父则是我国著名的现代汉语学家徐枢教授。徐适自幼受书香世家文化艺术氛围的影响，便热爱艺术开始学习绘画艺术。83年美校毕业后，85年开始探索具有音乐性、具有东方绘画语言的抽象艺术，后被称为色彩作曲家，徐适先生在不同创作时期的系列创作中；其中一个系列是1999年创作的多种“异形”形态和组合的画面。使画面同空间形成了新的视觉关系。
在这个“异形”抽象系列中，他以震撼而律动机器轰鸣；以听觉表现异形画面间的韵律感。另一个抽象系列作品则是以汉字和狂放的书法为创作素材，充满激情的创作和发展了多种“异形”画面组合，极大的扩大了抽象艺术的边界。在他创作过程时，从表象中抽取符合自己视觉审美需要的绘画元素，以达到视觉空间和色彩之间、宽面线与色块之间、情绪热烈激昂与舒缓平静之间；使画面呈现碰撞感、秩序感、平衡感，以纯粹的“异形”、“形态”和抒情性色彩表现具有东方艺术语言的抽象绘画。

Xu Shi, a famous contemporary abstract artist, has been exploring abstract art with Oriental painting language since 1985.
